Stockport MP Pays Tribute to Stockport County's Historic Success in Parliament

Navendu Mishra MP with Stockport County Club President Steve Bellis at a Town Hall reception to celebrate the club’s success.

April was a tremendous month for Stockport County. After securing automatic promotion with a 5-2 win away at Notts County on 16th April, the club returned to Edgeley Park to face Accrington Stanley on 20th April, where a 4-2 victory confirmed their status as champions of League Two. These achievements cemented their return to the third tier of English Football for the first time in fourteen years, and their first EFL championship since 1967. This was truly a season for the ages.

Navendu Mishra, Member of Parliament for Stockport, was keen to pay tribute to Stockport County’s success in the House of Commons. He tabled an Early Day Motion to congratulate the team, recognise the efforts of all staff at the club and thank fans for their loyal support. The closing line of the EDM “looks forward to many more years of success and prosperity at Edgeley Park.”

Mr Mishra also highlighted the Hatters’ success in a speech in a House of Commons debate on the Football Governance Bill on 23rd April. He began his speech by “placing on record my congratulations on the success of my local club”. Later, as he spoke in support of the Bill and called for reforms to protect local football clubs and to ensure their financial sustainability, he referenced County’s huge significance within Stockport; an example of the crucial contribution made by local clubs to their communities and to our national sporting culture.

Mr Mishra commented, “I am so honoured to represent Stockport County in the House of Commons. I felt that it was important to celebrate County’s amazing achievements in the Chamber, to ensure that their successes are permanently enshrined in official parliamentary records. As a historic team with a dedicated local fanbase, County are a huge source of pride, identity and community in Stockport, and continue to do us all proud.”

Navendu was delighted to attend a reception at Stockport Town Hall celebrating County’s success, where he met manager Dave Challinor, Club President Steve Bellis and first team captain Paddy Madden. This was followed by an open-top bus parade, with thousands of fans lining the streets of the town centre to cheer on their heroes as they made their way to Edgeley Park for a trophy presentation.
