Standing up for Stockport

I am Navendu Mishra. I was elected as the Labour Member of Parliament for Stockport at the 2019 General Election and re-elected in 2024. Stockport is home - where my family and I live. As such, it is a huge honour to represent the town.

Before entering politics, I worked as a shop-floor trade unionist in Stockport, before becoming an organiser for UNISON trade union, where I organised care workers in precarious employment to fight for better rights and working conditions.

It was witnessing first-hand how badly workers across all sectors were treated that inspired me to become active in the Labour Party and stand for election.

Prior to this, I was a member of the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee between 2018 and my election to the House of Commons in December 2019, serving as one of the nine Constituency Labour Party representatives.

I am passionate about standing up for Stockport in the House of Commons - working on vital local priorities like securing funding for Stepping Hill Hospital, improving public transport links, fighting for investment in Stockport railway station, tackling the urgent need for more social housing, and much more.

I am currently the Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Cancer, working to improve outcomes for all people affected by cancer, and I am a member of a number of other groups working on a range of national matters, including Parkinson’s, Fairtrade & Cricket. I am also a member of the House of Commons Administration Committee which oversees parliamentary services and facilities, ensuring the smooth functioning of our Parliament.

I am proud to be a member of both GMB and USDAW trade unions, as well as the Vice Chair of the Fire Brigades Union Parliamentary Group, and I continue to stand up for working people across Stockport and beyond.
