Stockport Express Column – November 2022

I recently spoke in a debate in the House of Commons on the Private Rented Sector and the problems faced by so many renters. Every week, my office receives a large amount of  correspondence about the problems with housing. The Government’s white paper “a fairer private rented sector” lays out some of the necessary policies we need to introduce to protect renters – from the end of Section 21 notices to giving greater security to renters. I was therefore surprised when it was briefed to the media that this may well be dropped. I hope the Government reconsiders this and puts the proposals in that white paper into law.

We recently marked Remembrance Sunday, where we remembered all those who have given their lives in conflicts across the world. I was thinking about the service men and women from Stockport, and the unimaginable grief felt by the family members of those that have passed away. I am very grateful to all serving personnel, veterans and volunteers who organised the various remembrance services across Stockport constituency.

I recently asked a question in the House of Commons about local authorities’ use of debt collection agencies. There is no evidence to suggest that debt collection agency use increases collection rates for unpaid council tax and many people are facing heightened financial anxiety as the cost of living crisis deepens. The Government has notified me that the relevant Secretary of State will be writing to me in due course to discuss this further.

My Christmas card competition has now ended and my office has received designs from pupils from primary schools across Stockport constituency. I am very much looking forward to sitting down with my team to judge the winning entries. If the designs I received last year were anything to go by, I’m confident there will be some absolutely excellent entries.

As ever, if you live or work in my Stockport constituency and require support on any issue please do not hesitate to contact me by emailing navendu.mishra.mp@parliament.uk or by phoning my constituency office on 0161 480 0833.
