Statement - End of Life Bill
I have received a significant amount of correspondence about the forthcoming vote on assisted dying. The Second Reading of the Private Member’s Bill is scheduled for Friday 29th November 2024.
I am very grateful to all those constituents who have taken the time to share their support for the Bill as well as those that have concerns. As such I recognise there are strong feelings and diverse opinions on this emotive, complex and sensitive issue.
The personal experiences that many people have shared with me have been incredibly moving.
At this stage, I feel it is important to update constituents given the level of interest in the Bill.
I have not yet decided how I intend to vote. I am committed to ensure that I consider all the views put forward by my constituents, alongside those of medical professionals and ethical bodies. To further inform my position, I will be looking at case studies from other nations where similar legislation has been enacted.
Please be assured that all aspects will be thoroughly considered as part of this process. Given the generational nature of this vote, I intend to approach this matter with the seriousness and sensitivity it warrants.
Thank you once again to everyone from across Stockport who has contacted me on this issue.
