My August Newsletter

Hello and welcome to my August newsletter! 

Parliament has been in summer recess throughout August and will return on 2nd September. Recess presents an opportunity for MPs to spend more time in their constituencies. I’m always grateful for the extra time I get to spend in Stockport over the summer, meeting constituents and local organisations and learning more about how I can best represent our communities when I return to Parliament. 

I was very glad to be able to go to Stockport Cricket Club for a fundraising event in support of Beechwood Cancer Care towards the end of this month. I had a wonderful time chatting with other visitors and enjoying the stalls, food and live music. I would like to thank everyone who was involved in organising and running this event, and of course all staff and volunteers at Beechwood Cancer Care, which is an organisation in Stockport that provides support for people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

I recently met with a member of staff from Stockport College, Michelle, to discuss the success of the college's voter registration drive amongst pupils. 

This is a really important initiative. Maximising voter registration is vital for our democracy, especially amongst young people, who are less likely to vote. I’m proud to see a further education institution in Stockport pioneering auto-enrolment for voter registration, helping to ensure that more young people can participate in elections and have their voices heard. 

August is a pivotal month for many secondary and further education students, as A-Level, T-Level and GCSE results are released. I congratulate all students in Stockport for getting through their exams and the nerve-wracking wait for results and pay tribute to all teachers and school staff for supporting students through this important period.

I met with Network Rail this month, to learn more about their plans to invest £16 million in a project to replace the bridge that takes the Greek Steet roundabout over the West Coast main line. As this project will be a huge undertaking, affecting key parts of the rail and road network and causing disruption in the local area, I thought it was imperative that I meet with Network Rail to learn more about the work, which will begin in the spring of 2025. The bridge’s replacement should lay important groundwork for the introduction of the Metrolink to Stockport – a cause that I very much support. I will continue to monitor developments closely.

I wrote to CrossCountry trains earlier this month to raise my concerns about their decision to reduce their services, including those in Stockport. CrossCountry is already one of the worst performing rail companies in the country and passengers have been expected to accept excessive delays, cancellations and overcrowding for too long. You can read my letter here. 

Stockport Council’s announcement that there are to be further delays to the publishing of a Local Plan for our borough made headlines this month. I worry that the Liberal Democrat leadership of the council is not taking the urgent housing crisis faced by Stockport seriously enough, given its misguided decision to withdraw our borough from the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework - now called Places for Everyone - in 2020, and subsequent failure to publish a plan of our own. I will continue to call for a plan for the delivery of the affordable homes our town desperately needs.
