My statement on the late cancellation of Stockport’s outdoor markets

Yesterday I wrote to the Chief Executive of Stockport Council about the late cancellation of outdoor markets after small traders and residents had been in touch with me to draw attention to the decision.

Although it was intended to restrict the spread of Covid-19, the timing was poor and has caused hardship for small traders, with the harsh irony that the 5th of December was Small Business Saturday.

Elected councillors were not consulted prior to the decision.

Whilst I reiterate my thanks to everyone at the Council who is working to look after us throughout the pandemic, I would also like to make clear the importance of good communication and consultation going forward.
