Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Private Members Bill

I have received considerable representations on the Terminally Ill Adults (End-of-Life) Bill.  I would reassure constituents that I have had regard for all of these. Again, I am incredibly privileged that constituents have shared extremely personal experiences and views with me.

I am not able to be present for the 2nd reading of the Bill on 29th November due to unavoidable circumstances. For avoidance of doubt if I were able to attend, I would vote for the Bill to progress to the next stage.

This decision was not made lightly. After much thought and reflection, I believe that moving forward provides an opportunity for further scrutiny and potential amendments to enhance safeguards. I am committed to ensuring that any legislation we adopt reflects our shared values of compassion and respect for all individuals, especially the most vulnerable among us.

In preparing to engage with this legislation, I have asked difficult questions of myself, acknowledging the responsibility that comes with such a complex moral decision. The framework we seek to establish must ensure that any assistance provided aligns with the utmost ethical standards and respects the dignity of the individual.

The legislative process in the UK Parliament involves multiple stages of examination, and many voices will contribute to strengthening this Bill. There will be further opportunities to refine the Bill at these later stages, and I am committed to advocating for robust mechanisms that protect individuals and families from undue pressure.

I take this opportunity to thank everyone from Stockport constituency who has taken the time to contact me and share their views.  The communication I have received has been invaluable in aiding my decision, and I assure you that it will continue to inform my approach as this Bill progresses.
