Stockport MP calls on PM to extend tram network

The Prime Minister was urged to extend the tram network into Stockport town centre when he appeared in Parliament this week.

During the weekly Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons, Member of Parliament for Stockport Navendu Mishra called on Boris Johnson to stump up much-needed funds to extend Metroline from East Didsbury to Stockport and give a timely boost to the local economy. 

The call came as the lengthy lockdown is beginning to take its toll on businesses in the town centre, many of which are struggling to keep their heads above water due to enforced closures, reduced footfall and a lack of Government support.

If successful, the Government’s support would encourage more people onto public transport and help to reduce the carbon footprint of all those that live and work in Stockport.

Speaking in the Chamber Mr Mishra said: 

“The Greater Manchester Metrolink tram system cuts carbon emissions, improves air quality and reduces congestion on our roads. As part of our post covid recovery will the Prime Minister commit funding to extend the tram network from East Didsbury to Stockport town centre in order to improve access, and give much-needed support to the businesses and communities?”

In his response, Boris Johnson said: 

“I am grateful to the Honourable Gentleman and I will study the plan he proposes with care. Though I should tell him there is already a massive infrastructure programme already underway as the Chancellor will shortly announce. And it may be that in due time, the scheme he proposes could benefit from those investments.”
