November update in the Heatons Post
October was Black History Month, a time which is dedicated to highlighting the achievements of Black communities and reflecting on the inequality that persists. There were a number of events in Stockport to celebrate Black History Month, including panel discussions, a food festival and a film screening. I thank the organisations that were involved in putting these important events on, such as Stockport Race Equality Partnership.
I am proud to represent a constituency with so many brilliant community groups. It is inspiring to see the many ways in which people in our community support each other. I recently visited Emmanuel Community Church to meet members of Oasis, a community group for seniors based at the church. We had an interesting discussion about some key issues in Stockport and how they affect older residents. I am grateful to groups such as Oasis for the support that they provide to people in our community.
I also visited The Salvation Army in Heaton Norris for their celebration of fifty years of the Salvation Army lunch club. The lunch club provides support and reduces social isolation by bringing people together over hearty meals, enjoyed in a safe and caring environment. I’d like to thank The Salvation Army Heaton Norris for inviting me to this event, and for their wider community work, which includes supporting victims of modern slavery.
As Greater Manchester’s Town of Culture 2023, Stockport is well known for its thriving arts and culture scene. It was great to hear more about this when I visited GRIT Studios, an art studio and creative workspace based in Stockport town centre. GRIT is home to a talented group of artists and makers and their work to bring communities together through creative projects is very exciting.
I also visited United Utilities’ service reservoir in October to find out more about their procedures for detecting water leaks, and how they are going to bring leakage rates down.
