Navendu’s Column in the Stockport Express
I hope you and your family are in good health and most of you have been able to have at least one vaccination so far. Earlier this month the Government continued to ease the lockdown restrictions, which was a welcome sign for our high streets, and I’ve been pleased to help support Stockport’s local economy by visiting shops, pubs, restaurants and many other businesses in my constituency. It’s vital that the Government does all it can to help so our economy is able to recover as quickly as possible, survive in the long term and protect businesses and jobs.
I had hoped the Government would set out bold measures to help our country weather the storm. Sadly, the recent Queen’s Speech contained very little in the way of plans for good quality jobs for everyone in Stockport, including bringing to an end the shameful practice of “fire and rehire” which I’ve consistently campaigned against. There was also nothing in terms of social care reforms, or fair funding for local authorities such as Stockport Council which face a financial shortfall after spending millions to protect our community when Covid struck last year.
Since my last column the UK has marked the one year anniversary of the start of this pandemic and I recently visited the National Covid Memorial Wall to commemorate the 128,000 lives that have been lost to Covid since the pandemic started, and to also pay tribute to our incredible NHS. I hope the public inquiry which is scheduled to take place next spring is fully independent and has the trust of bereaved families.
Anti-social behaviour continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing our community, and is on the rise due to cuts to Greater Manchester Police, Stockport Council and local youth services. These organisations do brilliant work across our town but are facing an uphill battle with their funding having been pared down to the bone.
I raised this issue in Parliament and urged the Government to address the chronic underfunding of these services. Despite the challenges, I am grateful to Stockport Homes, Stockport Council and Stockport Police for helping my office to support constituents who are victims of anti-social behaviour.
