March Newsletter
Hello and welcome to my March newsletter!
March has been an incredibly busy month in terms of visits, meetings and casework enquiries and I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the work I have been doing in Parliament and across Stockport this month.
This month, I have raised several local issues in Westminster.
Recently, I had the opportunity to meet with the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting to continue to make the case for vital investment in Stepping Hill Hospital.
In Parliament, I was also able to contribute to a Westminster Hall debate about improving transport connectivity across the North West. As you would expect, a large number of MPs participated. I raised several issues including the state of Stockport station, lack of step free access at Brinnington, Heaton Chapel and Reddish South stations, but also the need for a direct service between Stockport and Manchester Airport. I also want to see adequate passenger services at Reddish South Station urgently. I was pleased to be able to thank local individuals and organisations. During Business Questions in Parliament, I asked the Leader of the House of Commons about the social security support available to people with Parkinson’s and other degenerative conditions. Watch here: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1BowRQ7xSR/
Another way to ask questions of the Government is through a Written Parliamentary Question - this month I submitted several on topics such as flood prevention, healthcare, school funding, child poverty and more. My questions and the responses of the Government can be seen here: Written questions submitted by Navendu Mishra - MPs and Lords - UK Parliament
It is always great to welcome Stockport residents to London. Children from Vernon Park Primary visited Downing Street to talk about the Great Science Share Schools Scheme. This was an excellent opportunity for young students from Stockport to see politics in action and share their views on the importance of science and I was delighted to be able to meet with them.
This month marked International Islamophobia Awareness Day. I joined Amnesty International in parliament to discuss how we must continue to educate, raise awareness, and fight for a society where everyone, regardless of faith or background, can live free from prejudice.
International Women’s Day is also always an important day in the calendar, and I had the opportunity to mark this in Parliament this year by attending several events.
The Government made an announcement about NHS dentistry- the details can be seen on my website: https://tinyurl.com/3h9wehy6
The landmark Employment Rights Bill is progressing through Parliament and you can find more information here - https://tinyurl.com/44cba7xw
Access to cash is important to me and I was concerned to learn that NatWest are planning to close their branch in the Heatons. Including meeting with senior staff at NatWest, the actions I have taken on this issue are outlined on my website:- NatWest branch in the Heatons — Navendu Mishra MP
The Stockport Islamic Centre makes an enormous contribution to our town and the wider Greater Manchester region. I had the privilege to join worshippers for iftar.
I also held a coffee morning in Davenport and Cale Green ward this month, speaking to several residents about a number of local and national issues. I was pleased to be joined by local councillors, Dickie Davies, Wendy Wild and Paul Wright.
Please register for my newsletter to receive notice of future coffee mornings and drop-ins across Stockport.
The Stockport LGBTQ+ network celebration at the iconic Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery was an event not to be missed earlier this month.
As a proud trade unionist, I enjoyed attending the Unison Stockport Local Government branch AGM at the wonderful Stockport Town Hall.
Network Rail has recently delivered a project worth £1.1 million for Stockport Viaduct. This included the removal of vegetation, graffiti and brick repair. I had the opportunity to see some of this work at 3:00am. It was worth the early start! I have a record of raising the condition of our iconic Viaduct both locally and in the House of Commons.
The Government also made an announcement on rail accountability. Passengers across England can now see how reliable their local train services are and performance data showing the punctuality of trains has gone live at Stockport, Brinnington, Reddish North, Reddish South and Heaton Chapel stations. Following statements in Parliament by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and the Chancellor, this month, a large number of residents contacted me about the Government’s plans for reform of the welfare system. My full statement on this issue can be read on my website here: https://tinyurl.com/48e6f4yy
The graphic above indicates a small fraction of the casework I have received recently but this does not include letters, telephone calls nor drop-ins.
