Launching Labour’s Bold Plan For Skills Expansion, Job Creation and Economic Growth in the North West

I am proud to support Labour's ambitious plan for job creation and skills expansion in the North West, which was launched in Stockport last week. I joined Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham and Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram at Stockport Interchange to officially announce the proposals.

Labour is committed to rolling out a new British Industrial Strategy to create jobs in the North West. This will include ten-year research and development budgets for key institutions,  a policy which forms part of Labour’s broader plan to give businesses the stability they need to support job creation and economic growth. These businesses could include:

  • The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre North West in Lancashire, which works closely with the North West’s defence sector. The Centre will create 6,000 jobs by 2035 and support a further 22,000 jobs at BAE Systems across the North West, as well as 2,000 jobs in the National Cyber Force.

  • The Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in Warrington, which provides around 6,000 jobs in the North West’s nuclear energy cluster.

  • The Manufacturing Technology Centre in Liverpool.

Labour also announced plans to ensure that local young people can access opportunities in these important growth industries, with pledges to:

  • Support nearly 3,000 more young people into high-quality education, employment or training placements each year, by creating new training opportunities and driving up standards in schools.

  • Deliver 164,000 more hours of professional careers advice for young people in the North West.

  • Create a new youth guarantee to provide training, apprenticeships or help finding work for all young people, supporting the 96,000 young people in the North West who are not in education, employment or training.

  • Create a new generation of Technical Excellence Colleges to deliver new training opportunities, with an emphasis on in-demand higher technical skills.

Labour’s Deputy Leader and Shadow Housing Secretary, Angela Rayner, said:

“The choice at this election is 5 more years of chaos and decline under the Tories, or stability, opportunity and wealth creation with Labour.

“After the Tories’ failure to deliver high quality jobs and economic growth for Britain, Labour’s plan will create the stability that is needed for us to lead the world in the industries of the future - creating the kinds of jobs we want for our kids, in the places we live.

“Labour will relight the fire of the North West and drive growth in every corner of the country. You can believe that Labour is committed to tackling regional inequality in Britain because it is in our DNA. For over a century it has been a mission of every Labour Prime Minister to rebuild our economy hand in hand with local leaders so no one is left behind.”

The Conservatives' abandonment of their levelling up agenda is an example of its neglect of communities in the North West.

By driving high quality job growth in key industries and ensuring that young people are equipped with the training and skills to enable them to access these new opportunities, a Labour government will foster inclusive economic growth, supporting communities like Stockport to thrive.
