July Newsletter

This is my first newsletter since my re-election as the Member of Parliament for Stockport in the General Election on 4th July. I’d firstly like to express how grateful I am to have been re-elected as Stockport’s MP, with an increased majority of over 15,000 votes.

I thank everyone who cast their ballot for me and every local Labour Party activist who came out to support my campaign. It is people like you who are the backbone of the Labour Party and the success we achieve.

Election night at Stockport Town Hall.

With Labour winning the General Election and forming a new government, we are now in a position to deliver real change for Britain and for Stockport. I am excited to continue working on behalf of Stockport's wonderful communities, to implement the Labour Government’s vision of a fairer, more just society.

Following my re-election, I was sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Stockport in the House of Commons. Being sworn in requires taking an oath of allegiance to the Crown, as a declaration of loyalty to the British state. You can watch me taking my affirmation here

On 18th July I asked my first question in the House of Commons since my re-election, to raise the important issue of library access in Stockport. As I highlighted, public libraries are vital community hubs, providing a range of key services and digital access. It is very alarming, therefore, that Stockport Council’s Liberal Democrat leadership has decided to reduce staffed hours in our libraries. You can watch a clip of my question here

Speaking in the King’s Speech debate.

I also spoke in the King’s Speech debate in the Commons this month. The King’s Speech outlines the Government’s priorities for the forthcoming parliamentary session, and I used the debate that followed in the Commons as an opportunity to raise some of the most important issues in Stockport right now, including housing, healthcare and transport. You can read my speech in full here.

I was delighted by my appointment as the Parliamentary Private Secretary to Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner this month. I look forward to supporting Angela, who is also the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, and our colleagues to deliver the change that Stockport needs. This includes Labour’s New Deal for Working People, which will deliver the biggest boost to workers’ rights in a generation, and the construction of 1.5 million new homes over the next five years. I am proud to be able to support this vital work.
