It is time for the Prime Minister to resign

The Downing Street parties scandal that has engulfed Boris Johnson and the Government in recent weeks continues to rumble on, and it is disappointing that Sue Gray’s report was not published in full earlier this week, although her initial conclusions were damning.

Mr Johnson’s hypocrisy of failing to follow his own Covid legislation at a time when people across Stockport were making enormous personal sacrifices in order to abide by the law, has completely undermined his authority to govern.  It is time for the Prime Minister to resign.

Inflation and rising living costs have been at the forefront of many people’s minds, and families across the country are currently faced with a calamitous drop in their standards of living.

In Parliament, I challenged the Government about the ongoing crisis, and asked the Minister to explain to all those in Stockport how, for example, they are going to make tenancies more affordable, or decrease the cost of petrol and utility bills. In Stockport, the average rent for a two-bedroom property is £800 which, amid rising costs and less money in people’s pockets, is simply unaffordable. Despite a recent review of the Local Housing Allowance, the calculated rate is still only £650, meaning that many of my constituents are struggling to make ends meet and cover the cost of other essential goods such as food and heating.

Recently, I spoke in a parliamentary debate about rising health inequalities. Across Stockport, the gap in mortality and reported serious illness is stark. For life-threatening illnesses like cancer and heart disease, it’s a similar picture. Urgent and significant investment in our NHS is now needed to halt the rise in health inequality, and I will be continuing to push the Government for a genuine commitment to a truly universal healthcare service which is fit for purpose for everyone.

We have a national crisis in the dentistry sector. Most people cannot find a dental practice that will accept new NHS patients, which is compounded by the fact that dentists are leaving the sector in droves. I spoke in the House of Commons last week to urge the Government to address this.
