April Newsletter

Hello,

Thank you for reading my newsletter. I’ll be circulating a newsletter at the end of every month to update my constituents – or anybody else who might be interested - about my recent work as an MP.

I began April on a trip to Taiwan, as part of a delegation of Labour parliamentarians. The aim of our trip was to help build a relationship of cooperation and exchange between Labour and the people of Taiwan. It was great to meet President Tsai Ing-wen, government ministers and industry leaders.

During our trip, Taiwan experienced its worst earthquake in 25 years. The response I witnessed from the Taiwanese people reflected their strength and resilience in the face of such adversity. My thoughts are with all those who are injured, mourning and rebuilding in the wake of this tragic event.

I made my 300th spoken contribution in the House of Commons in April. Having reached this milestone, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on my work as an MP since I was elected in December 2019, which includes opening over 27,000 cases for Stockport constituents and submitting over 1,100 written parliamentary questions.

Written questions enable me to highlight issues that affect my constituents and hold the Government accountable. For example, I submitted a question to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs this month to request that the Government address the appalling pollution of the River Mersey, which you can read here

Stockport County continued to make our town incredibly proud this month, having secured promotion to League One for the first time in 14 years and then winning the title with a momentous victory against Notts County. I tabled an Early Day Motion in celebration of Stockport County’s brilliant performance, which you can read here.

I also gave the Hatters a shoutout in my contribution to a House of Commons debate on the Football Governance Bill. In my speech in support of the Bill, I called for fair funding in football and the establishment of an Independent Football Regulator to ensure that clubs are protected at all levels of the game.

This was one of three spoken contributions I made in the Commons this month. I also raised the unacceptable state of Stepping Hill Hospital - which after fourteen years of government neglect and underfunding is quite literally crumbling – and requested that the Government provide urgent funding for it to be repaired. You can read my question here

Along with Alison Thewliss MP, I sponsored a Westminster Hall debate on health inequalities in liver disease and liver cancer. As I raised in my speech, my constituents are at the sharp end of a growing liver disease crisis. New data shows that the premature mortality rate for liver disease in Stockport is 16.5% higher than the national average and for women has surged by 80% since the pandemic. This reflects a decade of decline in our nation’s health, worsening health outcomes and widening health inequalities. You can read a transcript of the debate here

I made a number of interesting visits to local community groups and organisations this month. I enjoyed visiting Reddish Men in Sheds, which is a community workshop that brings people together to repair donated bikes and distribute them to people in need in the local area. This initiative is a brilliant way to foster friendship and community over a shared skillset, whilst also preventing waste and widening access to the joys of cycling.

I also caught up with the Greater Manchester branch of the Fire Brigade Union at the Whitehill Fire Station in Reddish. I thanked them for their work representing firefighters in our community, who work incredibly hard to keep us safe.

I would like to remind everyone to vote in the local and mayoral elections on Thursday 2nd May. Polling stations open at 7am and close at 10pm. Please remember that you will need to bring a valid form of photo ID to vote.
